BRISTOL COUNCIL APPROVE SAINSBURYS’ PLANS

Bristol City Council has granted planning permission for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket on Ashton Gate stadium.

The decision is an important landmark in Bristol City Football Club’s hopes of a new stadium at Ashton Vale. City plan to sell their current home to Sainsburys’ as part of an enabling development for the new venue.

Club chairman Steve Lansdown said: "The club has been a part of the community for a long time and we want to continue doing so. There was a lot of talk about this project being all about me.

"This is not about me, it's about the football club and what we want to bring to South Bristol in the years to come. I truly believe the stadium will bring jobs and prosperity to South Bristol which it has desperately lacked for years."

The Robins continue to target 2013 for the opening of the new 30,000-seater stadium at Ashton Vale, although Steve admits there are more hurdles ahead. "The Sainsbury's application still has to go to the Secretary of State and there are I's to be dotted and T's to be crossed," he said.

"We’ve also got the Town & Village Green hurdle to overcome. Talks are still going on that and are at a delicate stage."
