Southend United Football Club have announced they will finally begin work on their new stadium at Fossettts Farm in June.
The Shrimpers’ chairman Ron Martin confirmed the start date during a special fans' forum on Monday night.
Plans for a new stadium were given the go-ahead in 2008 but have been delayed after the club experienced financial problems and were told to pay a £700,000 outstanding tax bill.
Martin, speaking after the go ahead, said: "I am also pleased for our many thousands of fans who have had to wait a very long time whilst this complex, and sometimes tedious, process has been conducted.
"As I have always said, the new stadium will take the Club to a new and sustainable level. All associated with Southend United should celebrate.”
The new stadium is expected to cost £50 million and will have a capacity of 22,000. However, the Shrimpers are currently sitting 22nd in League One, four points away from safety with only 10 games remaining.
Southend United are due in court on 14 April to face claims from HM Revenue and Customs that they owe an outstanding £183,000.
