UEFA has announced Sweden will host the women's European football championships in 2013.

Swedish Football Association spokesman Jonas Nystedt said he is confident the tournament will run smoothly, like the men's under-21 European Championship last year.

He said: "We are very happy and proud to organize this European Championship."

"We already think our female footballer’s situation is very good in Sweden and we hope that this will encourage more women in Sweden to play."

The 12-team tournament will be staged in different cities around the country in July 2013.

Matches are scheduled to be played at Gamla Ullevi (Gothenburg), Örjans Vall (Halmstad), Öster Arena (Vaxjo), Kalmar Arena (Kalmar), Nya Parken (Norrkoping) and Linköping Arena (Linkoping).

The final will be held at the new national football stadium in Solna, which is scheduled to be completed in 2012.

Sweden is no stranger to high-status football competitions as they co-hosted the tournament with Norway in 1997 and the UEFA under-21 championships in 2009.
