SEVEN DEAD AFTER STADIUM STAMPEDE IN KENYA

A stadium stampede at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya has left seven football fans dead and others injured at a league fixture.

The crush occurred as a crowd attempted to enter the ground to watch a match between two of Kenya's most popular teams, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

Six people died at the venue while another died later in hospital.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said: "I wish to express extreme sorrow and extend our condolences to the Kenyan football community and, most importantly, to family, friends and loved ones following these tragic deaths.

"I have learned that an investigation is already underway. Everything possible must be done to understand the cause of this terrible incident in order to prevent such a tragic happening at this stadium again."

In 2005 a stampede at the Nyayo National Stadium killed one fan, leading FIFA to temporarily ban its use in the World Cup qualifiers.
