NEWCASTLE COUNCIL SNUB ST JAMES’ PARK NAME CHANGE

Newcastle City Council has called on Newcastle United Football Club not to change the name of St James’ Park.

It follows a motion to council in which it decided to write to the media asking them to continue to use the name of St James’ Park in reporting and refuse to use the name of Sports Direct Arena. The council believed that the club’s decision to change the name of the stadium was wrong and called on it to reconsider its decision.

The council said it had no plans to change any existing wayfinding signs which bear the name of St James’ Park.

The notice of motion at the meeting on Wednesday, January 11, which was carried unanimously, following an amendment, states: “Council notes the decision of Newcastle United Football Club to change the name of St James’ Park to the Sports Direct Arena. The Council agrees with the overwhelming majority of supporters who believe this is the wrong decision.”
