Brooklyn's new stadium was opened in style on Friday with rapper Jay Z kicking off the party.

The 18,000-seater Barclays Center is home to the areas first major professional sports team in 55 years, the Brooklyn Nets basketball team and will also be a major music venue.

Being located in a busy shopping area of the borough, which is gradually become more residential, there has been a decade of opposition to the venue's build but it is expected to bring great economic benefits to the area.

The AECOMM and ShoP architects designed stadium has 101 luxury suites, four lounges and three clubs, one of which being a 40/40 CLUB, a chain owned by Jay Z.

Architect of the project Gregg Pasquarelli said he wanted to pay homage to the grittiness of Brooklyn, while still appearing modern and elegant.

He said: “We were trying to push the limits of what a sports arena can be. We wanted to make this arena more like a cultural building or a museum.”
