Campaigners who have been attempting to save Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium have been met and congratulated by deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

The protesters secured 6,000 signatures on a petition with the hope of succeeding in a last-ditch attempt to save the athletics venue.

The petition has prompted Sheffield Council to discuss the closure at an upcoming meeting.

Clegg, the MP for Sheffield Hallam, met the group at the stadium to praise their protesting.
