CONSTRUCTION ON NEW TOKYO STADIUM TO BEGIN IN OCTOBER

Construction on the new 80,000-seater National Stadium in Tokyo will begin in October.

The venue’s management group confirmed that the building work will begin once the demolition of the current stadium – which hosted the 1964 Olympic Games – is completed in September.

The replacement ground– due to cost around 160 billion yen - will be the main venue for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics and is also set to host the final of the Rugby World Cup in 2019

Plans for the stadium have been plagued by problems, including complaints that the design is too big and expensive.
