Sutton Council are renaming the Sutton Arena in honour of Great British Paralympic gold medalist David Weir, it will be rechristened the David Weir Arena.

Weir won four gold medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games - he was victorious in the 800 metres, 1500m, 5,000m and marathon in the T54 category - and he was obviously pleased with the news.

He said: "I am absolutely delighted; it is a very great honour.

"I have trained there and taken part in a few events there and it's an excellent facility.

"My daughter goes to the Arena with her school and it will be very exciting for her to see my name over the door."

Ruth Dombey, the Leader of Sutton Council, added: "David's achievements are absolutely astonishing and they provide great pleasure and pride for everyone in the Borough.

"Renaming Sutton Arena in David's honour is our way of showing the affection and respect we have for him."
