Sheffield councillors have confirmed that the Don Valley Stadium will be demolished, banishing any last-minute attempts to save the venue.

The council was told to save £50m this year and said it could no longer afford to keep the venue, where Olympic champion Jessica Ennis trains, open.

The authority's cabinet met on Wednesday 10th April and agreed that the stadium will close in September, and be torn down soon after.

The Don Valley Stadium was build in 1990 for the World Student Games and hosted Football League matches as recently as last year, before Rotherham United moved to the New York Stadium.
