Proposals for a new 2,000-seater community arena in Leicester have been unveiled.

The £4.2 million venue would serve as the home for championship winning basketball team, the Leicester Riders, and the Leicester Cobras wheelchair basketball side.

Leicester City Mayor Sit Peter Soulsby announced the start of a project to build on council-owned land on Charter Street in the city.

As well as hosting Riders matches, the facility could incorporate a fitness suite, classrooms, offices, bar and a café, and be ready for autumn 2015.

The project is part of the council’s plans to regenerate the waterside area.

Mayor Soulsby said: “The development of this new arena would bring huge benefits to Leicester. It would provide a permanent home for the Riders and Cobras, as well as greatly-needed facilities for the students of Leicester College, local schools and other young people.”
