French Champions League side Lyon are to proceed with development plans for their new Stade des Lumieres home.
The stadium is due to play a major role as France prepare to host the European Championships in 2016, with Lyon looking to move in ahead of the 2015/16 season. The French side have played at their current home, the Stade de Gerland, since 1950.
Stade des Lumieres will be constructed approximately seven kilometres from the city centre, with the arena set to be the anchoring point of other major redevelopment within the region. The stadium is also set to be the first in the country entirely funded by private investment.
France’s Finance Minister, Pierre Moscovici, believes the new project will provide a major boost for the area. He said: "The completion of the stadium is the result of determination and is an important day for the region and for local employment."
