A local court has blocked Real Madrid's plans to remodel their Bernabeu home.

Work on the venue was scheduled to start this year, with scope for completion by 2017.

But the court ruled that the development fell short of the Spanish capital's planning regulations, and the project is still under investigation by the European Commission over potential illegal state aid.

A Real Madrid club statement read: "The High Court of Madrid has overturned the agreement from Nov. 15 2012 which approved the specific modification of the Madrid General Development Plan, a decision that affects the Santiago Bernabeu.

"Following this ruling, Real Madrid will work with the city council and the community of Madrid to address those aspects that require attention in order to make the Santiago Bernabeu reform project viable."
