SACRAMENTO KINGS TO BUILD NEW NBA ARENA

National Basketball Association franchise Sacramento Kings are to build a new arena after agreeing a financial plan with the city council.

Mayor Kevin Johnson led the council in approving a $477 million arena for the Kings, with the board having voted 7-2 in favour of the project.

The 17,500-seater stadium is due to break ground this summer and be open in time for the 2016/17 NBA season.

The Kings are contributing $254m and the council $223m.

Johnson, himself a former three-time NBA All-Star, said: “We had our backs against the wall but we defied the odds.”
