TENNIS STADIUM COLLAPSES

Heavy rain and high winds caused part of an Indonesian tennis stadium to collapse.

The stadium at PTPN V compound in Pekanbaru, Riau, is one of the host venues for this year's Pekan Olahraga Nasional - a multi-sport event held every four years in Indonesia - and the collapsed canopy that injured two construction workers at 5pm on Thursday evening will not end the venues inclusion within the event.

Antara news agency reported the site was immediately closed for an investigation of the incident.

Pekanbaru police Adj. Comr. Arief Fajar said: “We have yet to determine the cause of the accident,” and added assistance in the investigation would be provided by Riau Police.

The incident was later described as "a small mishap" caused by nature by Riau governor H.M. Rusli Zainal.

H.M. Zainal added: "This was a small incident that should not be exaggerated. The collapse is only the front part of the roof, while the field inside the building still looks firm and ready to use."
